What is COVID-19?

COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by a new strain of coronavirus, known as SARS-CoV-2. This new coronavirus has spread in people only since around December 2019. Health experts are learning more about this new coronavirus and the illness it causes every day. At this time, there is no treatment or vaccine to prevent COVID-19.

The virus is spread mainly from person-to-person through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby – usually within about 6 feet. The droplets can also land on nearby surfaces and remain infectious after a contagious person has left the area. COVID-19 can even be spread by people who are not showing symtpoms of any kind.

Health experts are learning more and more about who becomes sick and the rang eof illness from COVID-19. Reported cases have ranged from mild illness (similar to a common cold) to severe pneumonia that requires hospitalization. So far, deaths from COVID-19 in Oregon have been reported mainly in older adults who had other health conditions. From the beginning of the pandemic, most children with COVID-19 had very mild symptoms. Recently, a new illness in children has been reported that can cause severe inflammation throughout the body. The children with this illness are very sick and require hospitalization.

Anyone who comes into contact with the virus can become infected and may or may not show symptoms. Coronaviruses spread easily to adults and children alike. No group of people is more likely to get or spread the virus. However, we continue to learn about groups at higher risk of becoming severely ill with COVID-19 including: people with chronic health conditions, people living in group care settings, health care workers, and other essential workers.

SYMPTOMS

COVID-19 symptoms and severity can vary significantly person to person. Here are some common symptoms the Oregon Health Authority advises you look out for. If you experience any of these symptoms, notify your health care provider immediately.

Help Slow The Spread

Wear a face covering

Wearing a face covering while in public or around people who you don’t live with is one of the easiest ways to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

Maintain social/physical distancing

Maintaining distance between you and people you don’t live with will help reduce the chance of transmission by droplet spread.

Information for Residents

General Information

Any resident experiencing new symptoms of possible illness shall be monitored through the “change of condition and monitoring” protocol. Common illness often seen in community settings include respiratory and gastrointestinal infections. These types of illnesses carry a higher risk of morbidity and mortality in the geriatric setting and must be monitored closely for resident health and safety. Residents with chronic medical conditions are at higher risk for infections and any accompanying complications.

For your own safety as well as the safety of other residents, If you are feeling sick at all or experiencing any of these flu-like symptoms, please inform a community staff member.

Visitors & Staying In Touch

We know this is a difficult time, and that now, more than ever, many of you may be relying on the support of your loved ones. However, in order to ensure the safety of all of our residents, we are asking that you try to limit in-person interactions as much as possible. Many alternatives are available for both social calls and medical appointments that use video chat technology. If you need assistance with this, or if you have questions about what type of visitors you can see or what accomidations your community might be able to make, please contact your community’s executive director.

Face Coverings

CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain, such as grocery stores, pharmacies, retail stores, and fitness related organizations. Cloth face coverings may slow the spread of the virus and
help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others.

We advise all residents in our communities to wear face coverings when they are outside of their rooms, and to practice social/physical distancing measures.

 Screening Protocols

With Oregon’s reopening underway, long term care residents may engage in community outings, subject to the same restrictions as any other Oregonian. however, the community will take certain precautionary steps to safeguard both residents and staff when individual residents choose to exercise their right to leave a community. If you choose to engage in community outings and or activities, it will be required that you complete a re-entry screening upon returning to the community each time you leave.

Screening Process

Screening upon re-entry from a community outing will include the following:

• Residents will be screened for signs or symptoms of illness including; fever, cough, sore
throat, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, loss of sense or smell, muscle pain.
• A staff member will perform a risk-based interview with the resident regarding the
activities they were engaged in while in the community.

Interview questions will include:

• Please describe what activities you engaged in while outside of the facility.
• Did you encounter other people in groups during your outing? If so, how many?
• Were they wearing masks or protective covering?
• Were you able to remain at least six feet away from others during your visit? For
how long were you in close proximity?
• Did you enter any establishments that did not require the use of face masks?
• Did you wear a face mask or covering while in the community?
• To your knowledge, did you encounter another person that was coughing, sneezing,
short of breath or fever?

If the risk-based interview indicates a resident engaged in behavior that poses a significant risk of COVID-19 exposure, the resident may be placed on a 14-day enhanced monitoring period. The community will ensure that the resident has access to a telephone or other electronic device(s) to remain in contact with family or friends.

During this period, the resident may be asked to;

• Limit the amount of time spent outside of their room, as well as limit any contact
with other residents.
• Wear a face mask/covering while outside of their room. Socially distance from
other residents.
• The resident will be monitored daily for signs and symptoms of Covid-19.

Information for Staff & Vendors

It is extremely important that all vendors and staff members take increased precautionary measures when it comes to serving our communities, interacting with other staff, and especially caring for residents.

Please make sure you are following all protocols, checking in, and reporting any symptoms or illness to managers and/or the Executive Director. As always, using common sense will go a long way when it comes to protecting our communities and is expected of all staff and vendors.

It is vital that everyone understands all protocols and increased precautionary measures. If you have ANY questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact the ED at your community for further information or training.

Boone Ridge

6/8/2020 Update

DHS is now allowing residents to leave the community. Additional screenings upon return will be required. The visitor restrictions remain the same. We ask that you hold off on taking your loved ones out unless it’s urgent and until after we test everyone. Additional information will be mailed and posted on the website within 48 hours.

6/5/2020 Update

As you know we have a resident that tested positive. He was out at the hospital at the time we were notified and he will not be returning to Boone until he has a negative test. We will also work with DHS and the local health department prior to his return. He is doing good.
There is a very long list of actions that we have taken since we received the news and one very important action we took was that we had all 117 employees tested on 6/2. We just got the results back and we do have one positive test on an employee that works night shift. This employee would have had minimal contact with our residents. We are testing her again as not all tests are accurate. She is now at home being quarantined and will not return until we get a negative result. She did not show any symptoms on any of our screenings.
We plan to test all of the residents next. We hope to have the results of all of the resident testing back mid next week. We are testing both Assisted and Memory Care. We are working closely with the health department and DHS as we navigate this situation. The testing that we are doing is voluntary we are doing it to protect our residents and staff.
