Halloween Activities for Seniors

At Moaisc Senior Living, we want to provide ample opportunities for our residents to engage with the rest of their community. Thankfully, there are plenty of holidays and seasons to plan activities around!

However, we understand some families can struggle to keep their older loved ones engaged at home. Social engagement is vital for older adults to stay healthy and keep their minds stimulated. However, a smaller social circle can make it harder to stay engaged.

Here, we’ll show you how we keep our residents engaged during Halloween in senior living and share some spooky season activity ideas for seniors!

Easy Halloween Crafts

Crafts not only let us exercise our creative muscles but also let others join in the fun! Whether it’s with grandkids, friends, or other residents, you can work together to create something beautiful and make memories that will last a lifetime.

We love crafting activities within our communities, such as at Meadowlark Senior Living. We focus on providing crafts that are engaging, creative, and easy for older adults to do. Here are some craft ideas we enjoy doing for Halloween in senior living:

  • Pumpkin painting is an excellent alternative to pumpkin carving because it doesn’t require intense strength and sharp knives. Plus, the pumpkins (and the art) last longer!
  • Halloween decor not only allows people to be creative, but it also lets them see their artwork on display for the entire month leading up to Halloween!
  • Halloween-themed door mats are a fun and creative way to welcome people into your space this spooky season! You can customize it with ghosts, cats, bats, and more!
  • Spooky paintings are a classic and creative activity for seniors to enjoy the season! You can make your painting cuter, spookier, or somewhere in between. It’s all up to you!

Games & Group Activities

If your loved one is not super creative, that’s just fine! There are plenty of other fun activities for seniors to celebrate the spookiest holiday of the year.

We really enjoy having a variety of group activities in our Mosaic communities because they create more opportunities for residents to build connections. By building these connections, they can more easily find their place and feel at home, which can boost their mental, emotional, and even physical health.

Communities like The Lodge Senior Living host a variety of engaging, fun, and entertaining group activities for seniors.

  • Trivia nights are popular with residents because they get to show off the knowledge they have accumulated over the years. It’s amazing how much someone can know!
  • Mystery games, like a murder mystery party, are fun and challenging for older adults. Plus, if you want a game that isn’t based around a murder, there are still plenty of fun options for you to choose from.
  • Scavenger hunts are a perfect spooky season activity for seniors. They can easily look around their home, find treats and prizes, and try to find all the clues before everyone else!

Themed Food & Treats

One of the most important ways we celebrate Halloween in senior living is with tasty food and treats! Our skilled culinary teams, like the one in Willamette Springs Memory Care, find creative yet delicious ways to celebrate the holidays.

Here are some fun food ideas that you can recreate that our residents love around Halloween.

  • Spooky snacks can add a fun twist to classic favorites that everyone loves. You can enjoy these anytime during the day, or before dinner!
  • Desserts are a fantastic way to end a meal – plus, everyone loves them! Our chefs and culinary team members enjoy getting creative with how they present their sweet treats.
  • Themed drinks are also a treat our residents can enjoy. For special occasions, our team likes to create both alcoholic and non-alcoholic themed drinks to spice up the holidays.

Spooky Entertainment

What’s dinner without a show? While you enjoy spooky snacks or Halloween-themed drinks, there are shows and other entertainment that can help put you more in a spooky mood (or a silly mood if you’re not big into spooky or scary entertainment).

When it comes to Halloween in senior living, our Mosaic communities enjoy these spooky season activities to get residents in a festive mood!

  • Movie marathons are a great way to celebrate the holiday! Depending on what you like, you can lean more into the scary movies or the feel-good, family-friendly movies. It’s all up to you!
  • Costume parades are an excellent activity for seniors that allows them to show off their creative thinking and crafting skills to their entire community!
  • Spooky walkthroughs allow residents to walk through the specially decorated rooms or hallways of other residents. Each community does this slightly differently, but it is a popular Halloween activity for seniors.

Community Events

At Mosaic, we are always looking for opportunities to engage with residents’ families and friends, as well as with the surrounding communities. We’re all about helping our residents build and grow connections, and getting to know people from the community gives us that opportunity.

These are some of the popular ways we connect with communities for Halloween in senior living.

  • Trunk-or-Treats are very popular because they can be held in actual parking lots or around the halls of the senior living community. Many of our communities, like the one at White Oak Village, enjoy hosting this kind of event for local children and families.
  • Annual Spooktaculars provide a wide variety of the above treats and activities for seniors to enjoy. For many communities, like the one at Boone Ridge Retirement, this is an event where anyone can come and enjoy the celebration, making it fun for the whole family!
  • Spooky Storytelling is a great way to help residents build connections, specifically with the younger generations. They can either share their own personal Halloween stories and memories or read Halloween-themed books to the little ones.
